The Importance of Good Husbandry in Sheep Care

The Importance of Good Husbandry in Sheep Care

Good husbandry is essential when it comes to caring for sheep. As a veterinarian who works with livestock and farm animals, I’ve seen firsthand how proper care can make all the difference in an animal’s health and well-being. Historically, veterinarians were focused on keeping livestock healthy to ensure communities were fed and clothed. At Cy-Fair Animal Hospital, we keep that impact in mind today when treating farm animals.

Sheep, in particular, have unique needs, and it’s vital that owners understand how to meet those needs for their animals to thrive. They are gentle, docile creatures, and caring for them is rewarding. Whether used for wool or meat, the health of the sheep will determine the quality of their product.

Common Mistakes in Sheep Care

One of the most common mistakes in caring for sheep is improper husbandry. Sheep can suffer from heat stress if their living conditions aren’t controlled. In Houston’s subtropical climate, managing temperature and humidity is crucial, and providing shaded or air-conditioned barns can help prevent issues related to overheating.

Diet is another area where mistakes happen. Overfeeding protein can lead to digestive issues, including diarrhea, which can lead to dehydration and other complications. Other common problems in sheep include respiratory diseases, dermatitis (skin issues), trauma, and ringworm.

Keeping sheep and other hoofed animals’ environments clean is vital for preventing hoof problems, which can develop if sheep are housed in damp, unsanitary conditions. Regular hoof trimming and checking for any signs of injury or infection are essential for maintaining good health.Good husbandry practices can manage or prevent many of the conditions mentioned above.

We often see sheep that are raised and shown in competitions throughout the state. While many of the animals are brought in from Future Farmers of America (FFA) or 4-H programs, great husbandry does not replace wellness visits to the vet. These visits are designed to ensure the sheep are healthy and show ready. We are happy to help educate owners on best practices and treat any ailments the sheep may have, while these students continue to hone their skills.
